Verdict

Good choice, check first

2+2 grand tourer with a 620 hp 3.9 twin-turbo V8, rear-wheel drive and an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox, as a coupé or, since 2023, as a Spider with a soft top. PistonHeads finds it true to the Ferrari spirit but not free of faults, mainly electrical and infotainment ones. The 2021-2022 Romas were subject to a safety recall on the brake fluid reservoir cap, to be checked against the serial number. A visit to a Ferrari specialist remains essential.

Known faults

Electrical and infotainment faults

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

PistonHeads notes a significant number of electrical problems on the first cars, most often linked to the condition of the battery, as well as a central screen that sometimes fails to respond or breaks down, a temperamental voice button, and headlights and door locking that operate unexpectedly. CarsCounsel similarly reports slow infotainment, screens that freeze and an intermittent Bluetooth connection, generally fixed by a software update. More of a usability nuisance than a safety risk.

Recall: brake fluid reservoir cap

Manufacturer recall

Ferrari recalled the 2021-2022 Romas (serial numbers 257415 to 282526): the brake fluid reservoir cap may not vent properly, which can create a vacuum and cause a fluid leak, with partial or total loss of braking (NHTSA, recall 22V-536). The dealer replaces the cap, and on some cars updates the software of the brake fluid level warning, free of charge. CarsCounsel advises checking that this recall has been carried out on 2020-2022 cars.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Check with the serial number that the brake fluid reservoir cap recall has been carried out (2021-2022 cars).
  • Test all the screens (central, instrument cluster, passenger screen if fitted), the voice control, Apple CarPlay and the steering wheel touch controls.
  • Check the condition of the 12 V battery and ask a Ferrari specialist to diagnose the stored fault codes.
  • Check the central locking, the headlights and the electric parking brake, which PistonHeads describes as temperamental on some cars.
  • Check the condition of the carbon-ceramic discs and the complete service history (transferable 7-year maintenance programme).
  • Spider: operate the soft top several times and check that it seals properly.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Has the brake fluid reservoir cap recall been carried out, with proof from the network?
  • Are there any electrical faults or a new battery in the history, and have the software updates been installed?
  • Is the Ferrari 7-year maintenance programme still active, and is the servicing recorded with the network?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
