Verdict

Good choice, check first

Four-seat Ferrari shooting brake, sold with a 6.3-litre V12 producing 690 hp with four-wheel drive (4WD), or since 2017 with the GTC4Lusso T, a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 610 hp in rear-wheel drive. PistonHeads says the weak point of the V12, inherited from the Ferrari FF, the front transfer box (PTU), is not fully solved, and the V8 is seen as simpler. Four safety recalls affect these cars (brakes, doors, fuel, passenger airbag): have them checked against the chassis number, and buy only with a complete history from a Ferrari specialist.

Known faults

Four-wheel-drive front transfer box (PTU)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

PistonHeads explains that the 4WD system's PTU, inherited from the FF, has a reputation for failing: a sealing defect makes hydraulic fluid leak, and the fault shows as “4WD Failure” with the Manettino stuck in Wet mode. The GTC4Lusso uses the same setup; failures are less frequent than before but still occur. A specialist rebuild is quoted at £7,950 (PistonHeads); Not Just a Car reports dealer quotes of $35,000 to $50,000 to replace the unit. It does not concern the GTC4Lusso T's V8, which is rear-wheel drive.

Battery, infotainment and electronics

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

PistonHeads reports infotainment bugs that can freeze the screen, faults in the seat-heating display, mirrors and lights, and passenger windows that lower after locking; batteries have also failed on cars used every day. Exotic Car Hacks likewise cites unexpected battery failures and an infotainment system that locks up (USB, heated seat controls), to be fixed by an update or a reset.

Recall: brake fluid reservoir cap

Manufacturer recall

Ferrari recalled the 2017–2020 GTC4 Lusso and the 2018–2020 GTC4 Lusso T: the brake fluid reservoir cap may vent poorly, creating a vacuum and a fluid leak, with loss of braking (NHTSA, recall 22V536). The dealer replaces the cap and updates the software to add a fluid-level warning, free of charge.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: doors that cannot be opened from outside

Manufacturer recall

Ferrari recalled the 2017–2019 GTC4Lusso and the 2018–2019 GTC4Lusso T: tension in the locking mechanism can prevent the door from opening with the outside handle, hindering access for occupants in an emergency (NHTSA 19V089; Transport Canada 2019093). The dealer fits new locks and cables, free of charge. PistonHeads also reports broken cables that have stopped doors from opening.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: cracked fuel vapour separator

Manufacturer recall

Ferrari recalled certain 2018–2019 GTC4Lusso and GTC4Lusso T cars: the fuel vapour separator can crack and leak petrol, with a risk of fire (NHTSA, recall 19V090). The dealer replaces the part free of charge. PistonHeads mentions this recall for cars built between October 2017 and October 2018.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Recall: passenger airbag gas generator

Manufacturer recall

Ferrari recalled the 2017–2018 GTC4Lusso and the 2018 GTC4Lusso T: the front passenger airbag gas generator can explode because the propellant degrades after long exposure to humidity and temperature changes, throwing out metal fragments (NHTSA, recall 19V006). The dealer replaces the airbag module free of charge.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have the chassis number checked to confirm that the brake, door, fuel and passenger airbag recalls have been carried out.
  • V12: request the PTU history (“4WD Failure” message, Manettino stuck in Wet) and a diagnostic by a Ferrari specialist.
  • Check the operation of the dual-clutch gearbox, especially the change from reverse to forward when manoeuvring (PistonHeads).
  • Test the central screen, the USB port, the heated seats, the mirrors and the passenger windows, and check the condition of the battery.
  • Check that the 7 years of servicing offered by Ferrari were carried out at the network and that the history is complete.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the recalls (brakes 22V536, doors 19V089, fuel separator 19V090, airbag 19V006) been carried out, with proof from the dealer network?
  • Have the PTU or the dual-clutch gearbox been opened, repaired or replaced, and at what mileage?
  • Has the battery been replaced, and was the 7-year Ferrari service carried out at the network?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
