Verdict

Good choice, check first

Supermini launched in 2011, rated very well in crash tests (5 stars at Euro NCAP). Chevrolet left Europe at the end of 2015, so the brand no longer has its own dealer network there: servicing and parts go through Opel garages and dealers. The weak points noted mainly concern the 1.3 VCDi diesel (DPF, EGR, cylinder head gasket), which should be checked before buying.

Which version to choose

Versions to favour: 1.2 86, 1.4 100.

  • 1.2 70

    Petrol · Manual · 70 hp · Crit'Air 1

Entry level (LS trim): judged sluggish by L'argus at launch.

  • 1.2 86

    ✓ Recommended

    Petrol · Manual · 86 hp · 5.5 L/100 km · 129 g CO₂/km · Crit'Air 1

The 86 hp 1.2 (LT trim), described by L'argus as lacking responsiveness at low revs.

  • 1.4 100

    ✓ Recommended

    Petrol · Manual · 100 hp · Crit'Air 1

More lively than the 1.2 according to Caradisiac, for barely higher consumption. Timing belt to be checked.

  • 1.3 VCDi 75

    Diesel · Manual · 75 hp · Crit'Air 2

1.3 diesel with 75 hp and Stop & Start, sold in France from September 2011.

Known faults

Clogged DPF and EGR valve (diesel)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

On the 1.3 VCDi, the diesel particulate filter and the EGR valve are cited as the main sources of problems, especially in urban use (CarVerif, Car Reliability Report). Icarsoft also reports EGR clogging on Aveo diesels. Mainly motorway use limits the risk.

Cylinder head gasket (1.3 VCDi)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

Fiches-Auto ranks the cylinder head gasket as the most reported fault on the 1.3 VCDi 95 hp, based on a very small sample (11 reviews). A Caradisiac forum thread links cylinder head removals on this 1.3 to valves clogged by EGR deposits. To be checked (oil in the coolant, overheating) before buying.

Manufacturer recalls

Monthly cost by item
Fuel or electricity€135
Insurance€57
Maintenance€31
Depreciation€50
Total per month€273

⚠ Estimates to treat with caution

  • NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
  • Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
  • Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
Fuel (petrol)€135

1.2 86 version: combined consumption of 5.5 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.

5.5 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €135

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Diesel: have the DPF and EGR valve diagnosed, and ask what type of journeys the car has done (town or motorway).
  • Diesel: check there is no oil in the coolant and no sign of overheating (cylinder head gasket).
  • 1.4 petrol: require proof of the last timing belt replacement (belt according to Compar Auto); its failure causes engine failure.
  • Check that servicing was carried out by a competent garage: Chevrolet no longer has its own network in Europe.
  • Check that common wear parts are available from an Opel garage before committing.

Questions to ask the seller

  • When and at what mileage was the timing belt replaced?
  • For a diesel: have the DPF or EGR been cleaned or replaced, and has the cylinder head gasket already been redone?
  • Where has the car been serviced since Chevrolet left Europe?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip

Check the history

Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chevrolet still present in Europe?

No. General Motors announced in December 2013 that the brand would withdraw from Europe by the end of 2015 (Autocar), with the Aveo among the models concerned (Top Gear). GM promised to continue servicing and the availability of genuine parts, for up to ten years depending on the model (press sources); idGarages indicates that Opel dealers handle the supply of parts.

How does the Chevrolet Aveo perform in crash tests?

The 2011 Aveo scored 5 stars at Euro NCAP, with 95% for adult occupant protection and 87% for child occupant protection (autoevolution).

What is the boot capacity of the 5-door Aveo?

290 litres, rising to 653 litres with the rear seats folded down (L'argus, 1.2 70 hp spec sheet). The 4-door version offers 502 litres.
