Verdict

Good choice, check first

Rear-wheel-drive saloon (type 952) rated five stars by Euro NCAP in 2016, with a 480 L boot judged average. Caradisiac rates it as fairly reliable, but it has been subject to serious recalls (fuel pump, braking) and owners report flat-battery problems. Check the recalls carried out using the serial number before buying.

Which version to choose

Versions to favour: 2.0 Turbo 200 AT8.

  • 2.0 Turbo 200 AT8

    ✓ Recommended

    Petrol · Automatic · 200 hp · Crit'Air 1

2.0 turbo, 330 Nm, rear-wheel drive, 8-speed automatic gearbox. Caradisiac considers it more than sufficient and less thirsty than the 280 hp version.

  • 2.0 Turbo 280 Q4 AT8

    Petrol · Automatic · 280 hp · Crit'Air 1

2.0 turbo, 400 Nm, Q4 all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic gearbox (Veloce). It is the only petrol version still sold after the 200 hp was discontinued, according to L'argus.

  • Quadrifoglio 2.9 V6 510 AT8

    Petrol · Automatic · 510 hp · Crit'Air 1

2.9 twin-turbo V6, 510 hp and 600 Nm, rear-wheel drive, 8-speed automatic gearbox. A very powerful sporting version: maintenance and history should be checked closely.

  • 2.2 Diesel 160 AT8

    Diesel · Automatic · 160 hp · Crit'Air 2

2.2 diesel, 160 hp, paired with the automatic gearbox, tested by L'argus in 2020.

  • 2.2 Diesel 210 Q4 AT8

    Diesel · Automatic · 210 hp · Crit'Air 2

The most powerful 2.2 diesel in the range, with Q4 all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard (torque quoted at 470 Nm by Caradisiac).

Known faults

Repeated flat batteries

Severity 1/3 · Annoying

Giulia owners report batteries that drain, with the causes given as the infotainment system not switching off or the telematics module not going into sleep mode. Software updates have resolved some cases, but several owners replaced the battery without solving the problem: these sources are forums and a parts website, not manufacturer documents.

Recall: possible fuel pump failure

Manufacturer recall

A recall (NHTSA campaign 25V586, September 2025) concerns about 29,467 Giulias built from September 2016 to June 2019: the Vitesco fuel pump can fail, cutting off fuel supply and drive power, which increases the risk of an accident. This campaign is American: ask a dealer whether your car is affected in France. According to the NHTSA acknowledgement, the remedy was still under development.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Braking system recalls (IBS module, control unit, rear discs)

Manufacturer recall

Several recalls affect braking on the Giulia and Stelvio: a faulty IBS (Integrated Brake System) module, which can lead to an ABS failure, on cars built from 16 January 2019 to 15 February 2021 (Caradisiac, autoevolution); a brake system control unit possibly fitted incorrectly on cars built from 15 April 2019 to 14 July 2020 (Caradisiac); and rear discs lacking material on cars built from 4 March to 20 August 2020 (Rappel Conso).

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Have an Alfa Romeo dealer check, using the serial number, which recalls have been carried out: fuel pump, IBS module, brake control unit, rear discs.
  • Check the condition of the battery and ask whether the car has been left flat; check whether the software updates have been done.
  • Test the multimedia screen and the instrument cluster: Caradisiac notes electronics and screen bugs.
  • Ask for the full service history, including the ZF gearbox oil change, which is worth doing despite the 'lifetime' label (Caradisiac).
  • Diesel: check the AdBlue system and the particulate filter, which Caradisiac lists among the points to watch.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the manufacturer recalls (fuel pump, braking) been carried out, and can you prove it?
  • Has the battery already been replaced, or has the car already been left flat?
  • Do you have the service invoices, including the automatic gearbox oil change?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.
