Our conclusion
Same reliability score (3/5) and 5 Euro NCAP stars for both (2015 for the Mégane IV, 2012 for the Golf VII). Their faults differ: oil consumption on the early 1.2 TCe and clutch problems on the manual 1.3 TCe for the Mégane; DQ200 DSG7 gearbox, water pump and oil consumption on the early 1.4 TSI, and turbocharger on the 1.6 TDI for the Golf. Boot capacities are close (384 L against 380 L). The right choice depends on the version: avoid the 1.2 TCe on the Mégane and the 1.4 TSI DSG7 on the Golf.
