1.4 TSI 125 DSG7

  1. Dry-clutch DSG7 gearbox (DQ200): mechatronics and clutches

    Severity 2/3 · Costly

The 7-speed DQ200 DSG gearbox, with dry clutches, is fitted to the smaller engines (1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.6 TDI). Its clutches do not like heat in urban traffic and repeated starts; the symptoms are jerking when pulling away, delayed gear changes, a switch to degraded mode or a complete failure of the mechatronics. The hydraulic control oil is separate, and an oil change every 60,000 km is recommended.

  2. Water pump and thermostat housing leak

    Severity 2/3 · Costly

The water pump, housed in a plastic casing together with the thermostat, can leak at its casing or its shaft, causing the coolant level to drop; the signs are leaks, overheating or a whistling noise. The pump and the housing are generally replaced together.

1.6 TDI 110

  1. Turbo of the 1.6 TDI

    Severity 2/3 · Costly

The turbo is the most reported fault on the 110 hp 1.6 TDI. BYmyCAR advises against the 105 hp 1.6 TDI built before 2015 because of its turbo problems, and CarVerif recommends avoiding a 1.6 TDI 105/110 without proof that the turbo has been dealt with if there is noise, loss of power or an unclear history.

Read fault codes

An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
