Verdict
Seven-seat hybrid people carrier (1.8 petrol and electric motor, 136 hp combined), which offers a 505 L boot in the five-seat configuration. Two points are documented: a risk of cylinder head gasket failure on high-mileage cars, under difficult driving, and a 2015 software recall for the hybrid system's inverter. Check that the engine computer reprogramming and the recall have been carried out.

Known faults
Cylinder head gasket failure under difficult driving
Severity 2/3 · CostlyAccording to L'argus, the Prius 3 and Prius+ (2012-2019) can suffer a cylinder head gasket failure linked to the water pump under difficult driving conditions (a lot of city driving or idling), especially beyond 200,000 km with frequent temperature rises. A Toyota Motor Europe technical bulletin (2014) covers the Prius and the Prius+ and cites coolant consumption, white smoke and misfiring. The Toyota network reprograms the engine computer as a precaution.

2015 recall: hybrid inverter software bug
Manufacturer recallIn 2015, Toyota recalled Auris Hybrids and Prius+ built from May 2010 to November 2014 (22,362 vehicles in France according to the press): a programming error in the hybrid system's inverter could cause overheating and a switch to a degraded mode with reduced power, more rarely an immobilisation. The software update takes around thirty minutes and is free of charge.
Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Real monthly cost
Fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation, excluding finance. Move the slider to match your mileage. How it is calculated
| Fuel or electricity | €101 |
|---|---|
| Insurance | €57 |
| Maintenance | €37 |
| Depreciation | €137 |
| Total per month | €332 |
⚠ Estimates to treat with caution
- NEDC consumption (older, more optimistic than WLTP) as no WLTP figure is published: fuel is probably slightly underestimated.
- Insurance: average for a closely related model (other generation or same platform).
- Maintenance: published servicing price plus an estimated allowance for tyres and brakes.
- Maintenance: budget of a closely related model.
- Depreciation estimated at 12% of the median price a year, as no year-by-year valuation is usable.
Calculation details (12,000 km a year)
- Fuel (petrol)€101
136h Active version: combined consumption of 4.1 L/100 km, increased by 15% for real-world driving, at 2.14 €/L, for 1,000 km a month.
4.1 × 1.15 × 2.14 € × 10 = €101
Petrol price (SP95-E10): French national average on 7 October 2026.
- Insurance€57
Average monthly premium published for this model by insurance comparison sites (comprehensive cover when stated). Your premium depends on your profile.
- Maintenance€37
Servicing and wear parts (tyres, brakes) for 12,000 km a year, per month.
- Depreciation€137
Value lost in a year by a typical example, from the valuation gap between two years, per month.
Inspection checklist

Things to check
- Have Toyota check, using the serial number, that the inverter software recall (2015) and the engine computer reprogramming have been carried out.
- Check the coolant level, the absence of white smoke and misfiring on a cold start, especially on a high-mileage car or one that has done a lot of city driving.
- Ask for the usage history: a former taxi or fleet vehicle will have been driven more harshly.
- Extended test drive: the hybrid system must not switch to degraded mode or show any warning light.
- Check the flexibility of the third-row seats (50/50 folding) and the sliding of the second row.
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the engine computer reprogramming and the inverter software recall been carried out at Toyota?
- Has the coolant level had to be topped up?
- How was the car used (city, taxi, fleet) and is its servicing followed at Toyota?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Before you buy: check and equip
Check the history
Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.
Read fault codes
An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.
Parts and maintenance

Frequently asked questions
What is the boot capacity of the Prius+?
505 litres in the five-seat configuration, and 200 litres with all seven seats in use (Carbuyer, Automobile-Dimension).
Has the Prius+ been recalled?
Yes: in 2015, a software recall concerned Auris Hybrids and Prius+ built from May 2010 to November 2014, for a risk of the hybrid system's inverter overheating. The update is free of charge.
What is the weak point of a used Prius+?
The cylinder head gasket, according to L'argus: the risk mainly concerns high-mileage cars (beyond 200,000 km) used in town or at idle. Toyota reprograms the engine computer as a precaution.
