Verdict

Good choice, check first

Electric SUV sold in France since 2021 and facelifted ("Juniper") in 2025, rated 5 stars by Euro NCAP in 2022 and again in 2025. Caradisiac judges its reliability very good, but the front end is its weak point: squeaks and wear of the bushes and ball joints, and last place in the German MOT (TÜV), mainly because of the suspension. Have the front end inspected and check the wheel-hub recall on 2021 examples.

Known faults

Squeaking and wear of the front end (bushes and arm ball joints)

Severity 2/3 · Costly

The front end is the main point to watch: high-pitched squeaks at the front, of which the upper arm ball joint is a frequent cause according to Fiches-auto, and suspension arm bushes judged undersized. The parts manufacturer Meyle has identified suspension arms corroded by water running from the windscreen onto the ball joint, and offers a reinforced arm. Caradisiac advises choosing a car whose bushes have been greased or replaced.

Last place at the German MOT (TÜV): suspension, brakes, lighting

Severity 2/3 · Costly

In the TÜV-Report 2026, the Model Y is ranked last among vehicles aged two to three years, with 17.3% major defects (against 6.5% on average for this age group), the worst result in ten years for this category. The faults relate mainly to axle suspension, as well as to brakes and lighting.

Wheel hubs poorly heat-treated (recall)

Manufacturer recall

On some examples, the front and rear wheel hubs may not have received adequate heat treatment: they can bend or break, causing a sudden change in wheel alignment and a loss of stability. Tesla recalled the affected vehicles for inspection at a service centre. In France, according to L'argus, the recall concerns Model Ys built between June and November 2021.

Fixed free of charge by a dealer and not counted in the reliability score: ask for proof the work was done (invoice, or a VIN check at a dealer).

Inspection checklist

Things to check

  • Test the car with the window down, at full steering lock and over a speed bump: a squeak from the front end signals worn ball joints or arm bushes.
  • For a 2021 example, check with Tesla, using the serial number, that the wheel-hub recall has been carried out.
  • Have the brake discs and pads checked, as well as the lighting, which are often flagged at the MOT.
  • Check tyre wear: uneven wear can indicate a geometry or running gear problem.
  • Ask for a state-of-health (SoH) report on the battery.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Have the recalls, in particular the wheel-hub recall, been carried out at Tesla?
  • Has the front end (arms, ball joints, bushes) already been repaired or greased? Do you have the invoices?
  • Has the car had a re-test at the MOT, and for what reason?

Test-drive tip: read the fault codes

A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Euro NCAP rating of the Tesla Model Y?

5 stars in 2022, with 97% for adult protection, 87% for children, 82% for vulnerable road users and 98% for safety assist. The facelifted version again obtained 5 stars in 2025 (91% adults, 93% children, 86% vulnerable road users, 92% safety assist).

What is the weak point of a used Model Y?

Is the Model Y reliable at the MOT?

No: the TÜV-Report 2026 ranks it last among cars aged two to three years, with 17.3% major defects, mainly on axle suspension, brakes and lighting.
