Verdict
Rear-wheel-drive coupé with a 2.4 L boxer engine producing 234 hp, sold in Europe until 2024 and then withdrawn because of the GSR2 safety regulations. Owner tests in the United States show oil pressure drops in hard cornering on track, which some link to engine failures: avoid pushing it hard on track without care. No Euro NCAP test exists for this generation.

Known faults
Oil pressure drop in the FA24 engine on track
Severity 2/3 · CostlyUS owners have measured, on track, oil pressure drops that can exceed 50% in right-hand corners, especially on gradients, on BRZ/GR86 cars with the FA24 engine (sample of three cars). One owner says they know three people whose engine failed on track and links these failures to this phenomenon; this is a testimony, not a statistic. The risk is mainly in sporty or track use.

Inspection checklist
Subaru BRZ II (ZD) — inspection checklist
Things to check
- Ask whether the car has been driven on a track or in very sporty conditions, and check the service history and oil changes.
- Check the engine oil level and look for leaks.
- Check with the Subaru or Toyota network whether warranty cover applies: the BRZ has not been sold in Europe since 2024.
- Try the clutch and the gearbox (manual or automatic) when cold and when warm, listening for noises and jerks.
- Check the condition of the rear tyres and brakes (rear-wheel drive, faster wear when driven sportily).
Questions to ask the seller
- Has the car already been used on a track?
- What servicing and oil changes have been done, and where?
- Has there been any engine work or a recall?
Test-drive tip: read the fault codes
A warning light that is off proves nothing: a fault may have been cleared just before the viewing. A Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, plugged in under the steering wheel and read on your phone, shows stored codes and whether all emissions readiness tests have run since the last reset.

Check the history
Before paying, check the administrative status (lien, objection, declared claims) and the mileage recorded at the roadworthiness test.
Read fault codes
An OBD scanner plugged in under the steering wheel shows stored fault codes, even with warning lights off: useful during the test drive.

Frequently asked questions

Not for the current generation: a 2026 comparison indicates that neither the BRZ nor the GR86 has been tested by Euro NCAP in its current generation (Carvago).
What is the power of the BRZ II?
234 hp for 250 Nm with a 2.4 L naturally aspirated boxer, with a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox (Moniteur Automobile, Suisse Automag).
